The 1969 Oldsmobile 442 was already recognized as a formidable muscle car in its era, but for those who sought the ultimate performance variant of this model, the W-30 performance option was ordered. The W-30 400 CI V-8 engine was upgraded to 360 HP (a conservative estimate) with 400 lb-ft of torque with the addition of the following: a forced air induction system that funneled fresh air from inlet scoops tucked under the front bumper into a sealed twin snorkel air cleaner assembly atop a Rochester 4-barrel carburetor, D-code heads with larger inlet and exhaust valves, a modified camshaft profile with increased lift and duration, and a special distributor offering a more radical advance curve.

The W-30 was externally identifiable with its discreet red color front inner fender wells, pin stripe-surrounded hood stripes, twin chrome air scoops located under the front bumper and W-30 callouts located on the forward edge of the front fenders.
